Livin’ the Dream

“So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.”
2 Corinthians 5:9 (NIV)

The chirpy road sweeper gave me a big smile as I passed by – ‘how are you’ I asked. With an even larger smile he called out, ‘I’m livin’ the dream!’ I laughed and thought to myself ‘Well if he is ‘livin’ the dream’ sweeping the streets, am I also ‘livin’ the dream?’ My new friend was content and happy with his life. Little did he know the thought process he initiated in my head following his words.

Dreams – not the kind we have when we sleep – but aspirations. For many it is a windfall of wealth, better health, that sports car, a perfect partner in life – the list is endless. As a Christian I must ask myself what should be my total aspiration? Surely it is to please my heavenly Father. I remember how good it felt when my earthly Dad would praise me or tell me how proud he was of me; I knew I was loved and tried hard to please him in my daily life. How much more should I strive to please my perfect, loving Father, God?

I don’t need to earn His love – I have that already and it is ongoing – paid for by Jesus Christ (John 3:16). My feeble human logic tells me that I want to please God my Father, but how? Paul tells us “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (Romans 12:1). I want to be that living sacrifice that God can use in His service—that’s my dream.

Let’s all live the dream of sharing eternity with our wonderful Father as He fulfils His dream.

Prayer
Thank you, loving Father, for the hope you have given us by your grace. We yearn to please you and thank you for the power given by the Holy Spirit to enable us do so.
Amen
