My hero!

“For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example…
but in order to make ourselves a model for you to imitate…
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
2 Thessalonians 3:7, 9; 1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV UK)

I was due to attend a gathering but, reluctantly, I had to cancel. A long-time friend sent me a consolation present—a penguin key ring. Turns out to be Pingu, of whom I remember nothing. So I looked him up. His heyday was in the 1970s on British TV. Pingu was a stop-frame animation children’s series of films about the adventures of a boy penguin. Little wiser, I turned to a Pingu blog which told me: “Life without Pingu is a life that is empty. A life with Pingu is one with joy, laughter, love and hope.” How had I survived!?

For that writer, Pingu was his hero. But, let me remind you, Pingu doesn’t exist. He is the figment of some creative writer’s imagination and infinite patience filming his model a minute step at a time. Not someone on whom to place hero worship status.

For Christians it’s all too easy to assert that their hero is Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, too often our actions belie that. It is easier, perhaps, to identify with a lesser character from the Biblical account. My own favourite has to be Barnabas. Reading between the lines, I don’t think he had an easy time of it as companion to the apostle Paul. There are recorded rows, splits and eventually reconciliations. But his, ultimately, is a story of relentlessly following the Christian walk through thick and thin. And that makes him my hero.

Holy Father, it is so easy to get swallowed up in mere hero worship. But we need heroes to follow, to emulate, as they follow Jesus Christ. For that, Holy Father, we need your constant help to be vigilant and for true discernment.
