Set in Stone

“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:11 (NIV)

Buildings are part of our every day lives. We give no thought as to how they are built, and yet there is much to learn from the constituent parts that can apply to our lives.

Before the ground is prepared the architect produces a plan, then the foundation and corner stone are laid upon which the building will be built. Various materials will be used, each connecting individually and collectively to the cornerstone, bound together with a common bond. On completion, the entire building is topped off with a capstone to the satisfaction of all involved.

In Psalm 118:22 we read, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.” King David, who wrote this Psalm, recognised that we have an architect/creator who created all things according to a plan that includes everyone. The ground has been prepared; the corner stone has been laid – Jesus Christ is the foundation for all people. We are the diverse materials brought together in a relationship with the cornerstone and one another, bonded together by love through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 2:20 says, “having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the chief cornerstone”—when all is finished, the capstone is laid: Jesus Christ, the Alpha and Omega, will return giving humanity a foundation of righteousness.

Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit – your timing is constantly perfect. May you hasten the day when peace and joy will come.
