I Am Not Sick

“And the inhabitants will not say, ‘I am sick.’”
Isaiah 33:24 (NKJV)

The scripture above reveals that a time is coming when sickness will be the last thing on the minds of people. A little further on in Isaiah 35:3-6 it gives the future hope because the Lord will “strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful- hearted, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God…will come and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a dear, and the tongue of the dumb sing.” That picture is a far cry from the world today, experiencing sufferings from all kinds of terrible diseases.

I have enjoyed reasonably good health, but as I am growing old, there are visible signs of dim eye sight, breathing problems, high blood pressure, etc. I wish I could say, “I am not sick.” When I visit the GP surgery, it is always full and even wards in hospitals are occupied beyond full capacity. This is the situation in UK and worldwide. People are sick. The NHS in UK is a great blessing. In the USA there is lot of controversy and talk about free medicare and health insurance.

But there is good news. We have hope. God is our Healer and Jesus is our Physician, who took the stripes for our healing (Isaiah 53:5). Psalm 103:2-3 reads, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases.” Also in Psalm 147:3, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” The Apostle James assures us in James 5:14-15, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.”

Among the many causes of sickness is that mankind has polluted the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. We see mass production through pesticides and chemicals to enhance quick growth of all kinds of foods, mainly for greed. Minds are polluted too, and this has both physical and psychological consequences. We yearn for and look forward to these being remedied in the coming Kingdom of God. There will be pure air, crystal clear, refreshing water and foods with all the nourishments for healthy life. We cannot imagine what it will be like.

Let us not forget, God allows His children to suffer and in His infinite wisdom chastises us because He loves us (Hebrews 12:5-6). Through sickness, we realise how weak we are in the flesh. But our present suffering is nothing compared to the glory He wants to give us (Romans 8:18). I look forward to the time when people will say, “I am not sick.” It will be the reality of the future.

Prayer
Abba, Father in heaven, gracious and kind, merciful and forgiving, I thank You for the assurance of wonderful world of health and happy life promised through your words. In the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, our Physician, I pray and praise and adore You.
Amen
