Potatoes, Eggs And Coffee Beans

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
James 1:2-3 (NKJV)

A certain chef, when his daughter complained of the struggles of life being too hard to bear, took her into the kitchen and put on three pots of water. In the first he placed some potatoes; in the next, some eggs; and in the last one he ground some coffee beans. He talked to her about the struggles and rewards of life while the pots boiled. After a while he gave her a potato out of one pot, an egg from the other and poured her a lovely, aromatic cup of coffee. Then he asked what she could see and observe? When she replied impatiently, “Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” he said “Look closer and touch the potatoes.” They were soft, the eggs were hard and the coffee delicious. He then explained that the potatoes, eggs and coffee had each faced the same adversity—the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong and firm but in boiling water became soft and weak. The egg was liquid inside its shell and as it boiled, became hard. But the coffee was unique: exposed to hot water, it changed the water and created something new! “Which one are you?” he asked his daughter, “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond?”

So, in life’s adversities, how do you respond? Are you a potato—do you go soft and fall apart? Perhaps you are an egg, becoming hard, rigid and unforgiving? Or are you a coffee bean, changing to adapt and make the best out of the difficult circumstances, setting a right example and making life better for those around you?

In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is how you choose to react to it and what you make out of it. Life is all about learning, adapting and converting all the struggles that we experience into something positive. We won’t do this perfectly, and on our own it is impossible, but with the Holy Spirit to lead us, with Christ in us, we can make coffee out of life that grinds us and dumps us in hot water! As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:18 “But we all…beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” Colossians 1:27 talks about “this mystery…which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” He is the one who gets us out of hot water.

When we face the struggles and adversities of life, lead us Father, by your Spirit; transform us into your image through Christ in us.
