“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV)

Like death, no one can avoid temptations. We all face them every day. There is no exception. Christ Himself was tempted in all the points as we are, but was without sin (Hebrews 4:15). He knows how powerful they are. God allows these temptations so that we can be strong by overcoming them and increase in faith and trust God fully through Jesus Christ who strengthens us. Jesus is our High Priest who understands our weakness and is able to sympathize with us. In the wilderness Satan tempted Jesus using the scriptures, but with a twist. However, Jesus defeated Satan, counteracting using the scriptures as the sword of the Spirit and Satan quickly left Him (Matthew 4:4-11). We too have to put on the whole armour of God spoken of in Ephesians 6:10-18.

Temptations proceed out of our evil hearts, as it shows in James 4:1-8. These temptations are fueled by the society making them attractive, appealing, appeasing and acceptable. All of us need the help of God to overcome, for Satan knows our weaknesses and wants to destroy us because he hates those who obey God. We are all in the same boat facing temptations individually, but must not give in to them as Eve did in the garden of Eden, succumbing to Satan’s lie, eating of the fruit from the tree of good and evil.

I have been baptized into the Body of Christ since 1963, and so far have navigated through the stormy sea of life, sometimes through thick fog, with Jesus at the helm of my boat. Even if He is sleeping (He does not sleep for He is alive forevermore), I am safe and can see the lighthouse not far off. Each day brings me closer and closer to the shore. I say with the Apostle Paul “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected, but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me” (Philippians 3:12). James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” Let us thank God for leading us through all the temptations.

Our Father in heaven, I exclaim with the Apostle Paul, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out” (Romans 11:33). Hallowed be Thy Name. Thank You for Your great power working in us through Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ our Lord.
