An Unexpected Gift

“For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”
Romans 10:12-14 (NIV)

A few weeks ago my family enjoyed a week’s holiday staying in a converted railway carriage in rural Suffolk. As we were packing up to leave on the last morning, my wife paused to add a comment to the visitors’ book which had been left on the table. As she did so, she discovered that previous guests had expressed their appreciation for a cake which had been left unexpectedly for them upon arrival. Understandably, my wife was a little aggrieved that we had seemingly missed out.

Minutes later, my daughter packed away the remains of a loaf of bread, and underneath spotted a round sealed metal tin we hadn’t really noticed before. And sure enough, inside was a delicious looking Victoria sandwich cake, albeit now a week old! How disappointing to find someone had given us a gift which we didn’t even know about until it was too late.

This is what the Christian gospel is like for so many people. Through the gift of His Son, God has given them something incredible, but they don’t even know about it. As the above scripture explains, this gift is freely available to all, and yet how can they believe and call on Jesus if they’ve never heard about him? The answer is that God has given another gift, the Holy Spirit, so they can hear. As Jesus said in John 15:26, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.” So it is the work of the Holy Spirit living in Christians to make known this wonderful gift.

Our life, our hope and our future is entirely bound up with God’s gifts to us. But God’s great love extends to all those who don’t yet know it. As we have opportunity, as the Spirit works in our lives, we can live and share our faith, and support those who individually or collectively share the mission to help others hear about God’s unexpected gifts.

Lord, thank you for giving us so much more than we can dream of. We pray that as we have opportunity by your Spirit, others may hear of your precious gifts too. In Jesus’ name.
