“…seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Deuteronomy 4:29 (NKJV)

Being in the garden can involve hard work, leisurely relaxation or simply just stopping to look or listen to all the noise going on around us. On several days I had been listening to the birds twittering, when I heard the buzzards calling, rather like a cat’s call. Since they are carrion birds, their calling causes animals that are alive to move, but the dead will stay still which is just what they are looking for.

These birds can be hard to see as they rise on thermals and circle around looking for their food. As they rise higher they can be harder to see but with patience and listening to their calls the buzzards can be found. The most I have seen at any one time is a family of five circling. One young buzzard came down low to which a blackbird took exception! The blackbird went straight at the buzzard and defended its young. Although it had to go on the offensive many times, it managed to drive the buzzard away.

The Lord patiently calls and although out of physical sight, can be found by any who seek Him, as it says in the header scripture above. But many do not heed the call because God is out of sight, and since ‘out of sight is out of mind,’ the call remains unanswered. God is looking for us to respond to Him in faith, and that means actively seeking and following Him. In Isaiah 55:6-7 we read, “Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”

Hebrews 11:6 says that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. God can be found when He calls, if only we will look for Him. And just as the buzzards can be seen soaring in the air on the thermals, we too can soar to great heights with Him, as it says in Isaiah 40:31, “those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”

As we seek you, Lord, call out to us so that we can find and follow you on the wings of faith.
