Restored to Former Glory!

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”
1 Peter 5:10 (NIV)

There’s a very nice little programme on TV at this time called ‘The Repair Shop.’ This is the place where people make their way to, carrying precious objects that have been in their families for generations but which have seen better days. All kinds of items end up there: clocks, chairs, toys, teddy bears—the list is endless. Unfortunately these things, for one reason or another, have been relegated to the loft or the garden shed. They have been forgotten and have suffered the ravages of time. Broken, torn, covered in the dust of ages, falling to pieces, not functioning at all; in fact far from the condition they were created to be in. But, the experts who work there use all their skill to restore these items back to their former glory, much to the surprise and joy of the owners. Sometimes tears flow when they see their heirloom gleaming again just like it did when they were children! Great grandfather’s clock ticks and chimes once more, all bright and shiny, just like new and these people are blown away!

Did you realise that God is also in the restoration business? Yes! His great plan for mankind and, indeed, all of his beautiful creation, that has been broken, torn and become unrecognisable by years of rebellion and separation from him, is still of paramount importance to him. He longs and yearns to restore it all to himself by his great love, to the condition and purpose that he has for all of it. The Greek word translated to restore in the masthead scripture is ‘Katartise,’ which means to make complete, to put in order, to mend and to bring back to former glory! When God created everything, he declared it “good”—this included Adam and Eve; but of course they sinned and were cast out of Eden. Since that time mankind has been cut off from God and under a curse because of disobedience.

But the Good News is that Jesus came to cancel out that curse and reconcile us to our Father. And you know, those who have chosen to accept that special relationship with God now shine as lights in the world, as his beloved children, and are in the process of being transformed and restored to the condition that God has planned for all of us! A former glory, if you like. Because of this choice we are no longer children of Adam but children of God, with a new identity and a new purposeful life!

How will you choose?

Father, thank you for the reconciliation that we now have with you through Jesus. Keep us firmly in your love and mindful that we are your little ones.
