The Godhead – Three In One

“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.”
Colossians 2:9 (NIV)

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible makes references to the triune nature of God. God said in Genesis 1:26 “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…” That statement is not a reference to God and his holy angels, as man is not made in the image of angels! Man is made in the image of God.

Another reference to the triune nature of God is found in 1 John 3:21-24 “Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.” Verses 21 and 22 here make a reference to God, the Father. Verse 23 is a reference to Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, and verse 24 is a reference to the Holy Spirit.

There are several such passages throughout the Bible, both the Old and New Testament, that clearly illustrate the Trinity, or triune nature of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father. He said “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father…I and the Father are one” (John 14:9 & 10:30). The apostle Paul wrote: “the Lord is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:17). In him the fullness of the Godhead dwells in bodily form. To come to a true understanding and knowledge of God, we need to see God the way the Bible reveals him.

Thank you, Father, for giving us the Spirit and sending your Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is the perfect revelation of who you are.

Good job, Sherwin. The Trinity has been a contentious subject for hundreds of years, but scripture definitely weighs heavily on the triune nature of God. Thanks for sharing.
