I’d Do Anything For You!

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV)

In the popular musical Oliver, the Artful Dodger sings to Nancy, “I’d do anything for you, dear, anything; for you mean everything to me.” Nancy teases with, “Paint your face bright blue?” “Anything.” “Go to Timbukto?” “And back again—Anything for you!”

Jesus, our Saviour, gave his everything, endured undeserved disgrace and died for us—he loves us so much he gives us Eternal Life. What would we do for him?

The rich man of Matthew 19:16-22 could not go so far as to sell all that he had and give it to the poor. Thankfully, we are not required to do this. 1 Timothy 5:8 tells us that if anyone doesn’t provide for his family he is worse than infidel” (KJV), so we see that providing well and saving for our children is a godly thing to do.

But the principle of giving of our substance is important. Ephesians 4:28 urges us to work to have so you can give to those in need. In fact, James 2:8-18 goes further to say that if you see a brother in need and do not help, your faith is dead.

Jesus knows the heart and discerned that the rich man’s heart was on his wealth, not things above. Read the header scripture—where your treasure is, your heart is, so lay up treasure in heaven. Then we can truly say to God, “I’d do anything for you, dear, anything!”

You did everything for us, God. Help us to have the ‘I’d do anything for you’ attitude towards you and towards those in need.
