Abraham, My Friend

“But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend…”
Isaiah 41:8 (RSV)

We know that Abraham was a man of God. In Genesis 26:3-5 God instructs Abraham’s son, Isaac, to “Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will fulfil the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and will give to your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be bless themselves: because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”

Let’s notice what James said about Abraham, who is described as the father of the faithful, in James 2:23: “and the scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness;’ and he was called the friend of God.”

We all have met many people over the course of our lives to the present and, no doubt, we’ll meet many more in the future. However, only a comparative few have ever been, or ever will become, our close friends.

On the evening of his death, Jesus Christ described the need for loyalty, dependability and sacrifice as a component of our friendship with him. Speaking to his disciples, Jesus said in John 15:13-14, “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.” Abraham, the friend of God, did as God commanded him.

I have many favourite hymns, including the well known one What A Friend We Have In Jesus Written by Joseph Scriven, sometime in 1855-1857. The first verse of this hymn goes:
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Jesus is our friend who will never fail us or forsake us (Hebrews:13:5).

Eternal Father, thank you for allowing us to be a friend of your beloved Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, upon our surrender to you. In Jesus’ name.
