Quack, Quack, Quack

“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 (ESVUK)

In the mid-1970s the Dutch lager company Heineken started to produce a series of advertisements with the slogan ‘Heineken refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach’. They were wacky, humorous cartoon ads which had nothing to do with the beer, but nevertheless put up the sales of the product. You can still find many of them on YouTube.

There was one that portrayed a shooting gallery in a fun fair that really took our fancy. In the foreground we see end of the gun that is shooting a line of metal ducks that move from right to left across the back of the gallery. All the ducks are hit and flattened. Good shooting, but the ducks are not happy. Some cans of Heineken rush across the stage – it is an ad after all. Then we see an empty booth, but off-stage we hear the ducks and there’s a great deal of quacking going on. They are having a bit of a confab. Next: military music starts and the ducks reappear, this time seated on tanks. When they’re all in-line, filling the end wall, suddenly they turn and open fire on their tormentor. Boom! That’s got rid of the pesky opponent. End of ad.

All that quacking somehow appealed to us. When life seems to be firing at us and knocking us down, stop and take a break. It’s ‘quack, quack, quack’ time so to speak. In other more adult words, it’s time to take time-out and have a think about how to deal with a situation that is troubling us. It’s time to talk to God, it’s time to take a look what his word says about the situation, and it’s a good time to talk to others. The ducks clearly concluded they were helpless on their own. They came back into the fray seated on tanks. For us, we need to be armed with the divine power of God!

Father, when we feel we are being flattened by circumstances and when life seems to be going against us, may we have the wisdom to stop and step back. May we talk to you, look to you for the strength and wisdom we need, get encouragement from each other, and then return to the fray of life empowered to face whatever comes our way.
