I Am The Way, The Truth And The Life

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
John 14:6 (NKJV)

In looking at the seven “I AM” statements in John, each of the previous instances has related to one aspect of Jesus’ identity as God. In this statement above, Jesus identifies Himself in three ways: As the Way, He is our path to the Father. As the Truth, He is the reality of God’s promises. As the Life, He joins his Divine life to ours, both now and eternally. In the simplicity of those three statements there is awesome knowledge for us.

The people alive at the time of Jesus were, for the most part, confused by him. They were living under Roman occupation and some looked for a leader, a Messiah, who would help them to throw off the Roman yoke. The Jewish religious leaders looked on Jesus as a usurper and a danger to their prominence under the Romans. To some, He was an enigma—a man, like themselves, but one who could heal people, raise someone from the dead and control the forces of nature, but who did not carry a sword or conduct himself like a leader.

Even his disciples had a hard time understanding just who he was! But in this statement in John 14, Jesus was revealing himself as far more than just a man. Although puzzling to His contemporaries then, we today have the New Testament and the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding. Acts 4:12 makes Jesus’ role crystal clear: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

In all these ‘I AM’ statements, Jesus left us clear signposts of his true identity as God, not just a man. Jesus is telling us with incredible clarity just who He is and what He means to all humanity. This study, with the statement “I am the way, the truth and the life,” focuses on the simple fact that Jesus is everything for all humanity. We have no excuse for not understanding His true identity as God, his mission to save humanity, and the price He paid (His life) for each one of us individually. We have a hymn we sometimes sing called Our God is an Awesome God—truly He is, and in following Him we will find The Way, The Truth and The Life!

Gracious, loving God, thank you for the signposts in the Bible which reveal the true identity of Jesus Christ for us today. Help us to accept Him as the way, the truth and the life with real joy in our hearts. And we pray in Jesus’ name.
