I Am The Resurrection

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”
John 11:25-26 (NKJV)

This statement from Jesus came after Lazarus had died, but before Christ resurrected him. Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha, and in verse 5 of John 11 we are told Jesus loved them. But he delayed going to see them so there could be no doubt that Lazarus was dead.

There can be no greater miracle than raising someone from the dead and here Jesus revealed his identity as God even more clearly. Only God has the power to raise someone who has died to life. But in raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:43-44), Jesus was not only sending a message about his identity, but also sending a message to all humanity. Our physical death is not the end, God not only has the power to resurrect us to life again, but He will do so (Revelation 20:11-13).

Humanity’s greatest fear is death and that it is the end. But when Jesus says, “I AM the resurrection and the life,” He removes that fear completely for those who believe. He establishes beyond any doubt that He is God in the physical flesh, come to free Humanity from our fear of death even though many do not accept that in this present age, or have accepted it in the past. But the great joy we, as Christians, share is that it does not matter what humanity thinks, God’s power is absolute and His will is decisive.

The final proof is, of course, the resurrection of Jesus Himself and the fact He was seen alive by many people after His death (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

Loving Father, forgive us our fears and doubts. Thank you for providing us with the knowledge that death is not the end—that You have the power of life and we can look forward, with absolute certainty to our resurrection. In Jesus’ name we pray.
