Love, Love Changes Everything

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

Do we ever stop to consider just what true love might be? The Oxford Dictionary definition is ‘to hold dear, to have a strong affection for, to be devoted to.’ God has inspired it to be written that true love comes only from Him, for ‘God is Love’ (1 John 4:8).

God is the self-existent One, the Alpha and Omega from whom all things exist. He is eternal, as is His love, abundant, unconditional and infinite. We love Him because He first loved us, when he created male and female in His image and He knew each of us before we were born. Because love is who God is, He is with us always as is His love, for it is not dependent upon our response to His love. Indeed He has shown His love and grace toward us through His Son Jesus, whom He sent to live among us as a man. 1 John 4:9-10 says “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” It is only through Jesus atoning sacrifice for our sins that that we are saved – redeemed and reconciled to God, enabling us to be in a relationship of love with Him as His children.

The love of God changes us. 1 John 4:20 says “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” Perhaps in the lyrics of the song written by Don Black and Charles Hart are echoes of God’s love.
‘Love, (God’s) love changes everything, how you live and how you die.’
‘(God’s) love will turn your world around, and that world will last forever.’
‘All our wisdom disappears…live or perish in its flame,
’(God’s) love will never let you be the same.’

The apostle John explained it succinctly when he said in 1 John 4:16, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”

Dear God, thank you so much for your love and grace toward us. You will always love us and never forsake us.
