Blown Away

“He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Mathew 3:11-12 (NIV)

Chaff is the husk on the outside of a grain that needs to be separated from it to make the grain usable. It’s usually considered a waste product. The grain is threshed to remove these husks and in days of yore before mechanization, it was removed by repeatedly tossing the grains in the air till the chaff was blown away.

It’s also used as a metaphor for things that are worthless and need to be got rid of. The Old Testament does give a warning by likening the wicked or ungodly to chaff, to be blown away (Psalm 1:4). John the Baptist confirms that Jesus the Judge, is the One with power to separate us and there will be a time of judgment as we stand before his throne and the chaff will go.

Does it make us feel a bit fearful, or is it relief? Look at it from our point of view (those who accepted Christ), we surely have joy? In Jesus we have received grace. In him we are the accepted children of God. We have no fear of being rejected. We are no longer ungodly, because in Christ we appear before our Father cleansed of our sins. We are not going to be blown away. For us what is going to be blown away are the habits of our old corrupted nature. Right now the Spirit winnows us to remove our chaff, the husks of our old ways of thinking and being. We are being transformed now, but in this life we will never experience complete freedom from our ‘old man’. When we stand before our Saviour, that is the time when we will be finally free of everything in us that is contrary to God. God will finish the work he started in each of us, as we stand faultless before his throne. As the Message Bible puts it, “everything false he’ll put out with the trash to be burned.”

Our Father, we rejoice that even as we now struggle with the ‘sin that so easily besets us’, we know there will come a day when we are finally free of all our old ways, and through your Son we will stand before you perfected.
