All A Person Needs…

“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!”
Psalm 139:17-18 (NLT)

I’ve learned…That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand!

I’m sure that you agree with the above statement, in the stress and strain of life there are times when we all need just that—someone to come alongside us at a particular time and reassure us that all is well. It causes our blood pressure to lower and our fast beating heart to slow down a bit!

It’s kind of like the situation in western films, when all is lost, when the small group has its back against the wall and then here comes the cavalry! The bugler sounds the charge and all these horsemen appear as if from nowhere; amid great cheers from all those poor souls who are besieged.

That’s how our great God deals with his children; he hedges us around about with angels in chariots of fire! Just like Elisha and his servant during the siege of Samaria by the armies of the King of Syria. This account is recorded in 2 Kings 6:15-17—notice first of all what Elisha’s servant discovered: “When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. ‘Oh, sir, what will we do now?’ the young man cried to Elisha. ‘Don’t be afraid!’ Elisha told him. ‘For there are more on our side than on theirs!’ Then Elisha prayed, ‘O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!’ The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.” God’s cavalry had arrived to protect his servant!

God also lays his perfect hand of blessing on our heads. Notice again in Psalm 139 verses 5-6, “You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!” Perhaps so, but isn’t it comforting to be aware of that, to understand that we are precious to the One who created us in the first place? He is the one who holds us in the hollow of his hand and cherishes us as children. He is the Great Triune God!

Father, all glory and majesty is yours and yet you are concerned about us mortals who are the dust of the earth. You gather us under your wings in times of need and preserve our lives! Please accept our fervent thanks.
