Salt of the Earth

“You are the salt of the earth.”
Matthew 5:13 (NIV)
“You are the light of the world.”
Matthew 5:14 (NIV)

The nurse was making small talk as she prepared to put the cannula in my arm before attaching the chemo. The conversation turned to religion and she told me she was a Christian. “So am I,” I exclaimed. We discussed our churches and as she attached the liquid she said, “Bless this chemo”. A simple prayer, but it meant so much to me. After all, she was basically poisoning me! But Jesus can deal with that. Remember the viper attached to Paul’s arm in Malta? (Acts 28:1-5). As I left the hospital she told me she would pray for me.

This was not the first time this had happened to me. Following an unsuccessful operation, Hannah, another nurse had popped in to visit me. She explained about the Chaplaincy within the hospital and asked if I had a faith. “I’m a Christian and I have many people praying for me,” I said. “So am I” she replied. We had a chat and she prayed for me.

I visited my GP and spoke to a locum. Following the consultation, he said he would pray for me. I wasn’t sure if he was a Christian, but what a lovely gesture.

From my own friends and acquaintances I know that Christian nurses and doctors are sprinkled throughout the NHS just like salt. One here and one there. But in our country it is not always easy to share your faith. However, if these nurses had not mentioned their faith I would not have been able to enjoy the light they gave me, the joy of our shared faith and the encouragement of their prayers.

We need to be both – the salt and the light. So next time you see someone who needs encouragement, just mention your faith. You may be able to pray for them and you might just make their day.

Prayer
Dear Father in Heaven, you made us salt and light. Wherever you have scattered us, please let our lights shine on those around us.
Amen
