Men With a Mission

“Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.”
Acts 13:1-3 (NIVUK)

In Acts 13 we read about the very first missionaries, Saul (soon to be renamed Paul) and Barnabus. This momentous historical event follows on from the Great Commission in the final chapter of Matthew. Actually, I like to think of it as the Great Co-mission—a united mission of Father, Son and Holy Spirit who graciously allowed Barnabas and Saul the privilege of participating with them in their work of disciple making.

What has changed in the ensuing 2000 years? In the context of mission, absolutely nothing. Today, Father, Son and Holy Spirit graciously allow us the privilege of participating in their mission. Jesus, who was given “all authority in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18) by his Father, is present with us through the Holy Spirit. Think about that for a moment. We have the same all-powerful resource that these ‘super apostles’ we read about in Acts 13 had when they went out on their first mission!

Were Paul and Barnabus daunted as they were sent off on their first mission all those years ago? Maybe. Do we find God’s mission ominous or frightening? Probably, if we’re honest. But let us remember that the fullness of the Godhead – Father, Son and Spirit – is with us now, just as he was with them then. And, as Paul himself said in Romans 8:31, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Almighty Father, help us to remember that we have not been left alone to do the mission you have given us. You are always with us and in you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we have everything we will ever need. We pray this in the name of the one to whom you have given all power and authority, your Son, Jesus Christ.
