Coming or Going

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

“Oh” I exclaimed after a very hectic day, “I don’t know whether I am coming or going!” A cup of tea and a moment of quiet soon replaced my equilibrium. However, I was reminded of Christ’s words that on the face of it seem ambiguous in John 17:16-18 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.” Jesus Christ describes us as not being of the world and yet we are being sent into the world. Are we coming or going?

The Saviour of the world has bought us with his blood and made us His own—citizens of His kingdom. Colossians 1:13 says, “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” This seems clear enough, yet He sends us out into this world, a world of sin and shame. Now that we are citizens of the kingdom of God, we need to show others what it is like. This world needs the promise and hope of the gospel, the good news of the kingdom of God. Acts 13:47 reminds us, “For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

To simplify: I am coming into God’s kingdom – but going into the world as His representative. By Him living in me the world will see the promise of the kingdom of God. So now, spiritually, I really am coming and going!

Thank you, my Lord Jesus, for your grace toward a sinner such as I. Grant that I may shine your light in the darkness of this world, thus giving hope of your wonderful kingdom.
