The Train to America

“Where there is ignorance of God, crime runs wild; but what a wonderful thing it is for a nation to know and keep his laws.”
Proverbs 29:18 (TLB)

We have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to have a few holidays in America. But, as I get older I don’t like flying at all, especially the long flights needed to get to the USA. I am also a bad sailor so could not think about going by ship.

So I came up with the bright idea of going by train. I checked all the main London stations, and even major regional ones, only to discover you can’t get to America by train from the UK. But why can’t I avoid the stress and hassle of flying? So here I am, determined to find a train to take me to America, can you help me? No, of course not, because no one has yet built a bridge or a tunnel to connect the UK with the US. The problem is called the Atlantic ocean! If I persist that I want to go by train, you would eventually conclude that I was either ignorant or hadn’t had my morning coffee yet! But, actually, the problem is that I am trying to change the world to suit my vision of it! In my vision of the world there should be a train from the UK to the US for my convenience.

Like me, other people try to create their own version of what the world should be! Are they all ignorant or stupid? Obviously not, but here is an interesting thought. An awful lot of people have a vision of the world with no first cause, no creator, no God. They believe in atheism and life somehow evolving out of nothing. How anyone can look at the world around them and not see a creator’s hand is simply amazing.

An awful lot of people believe that good and bad are comparative, that there is no right or wrong, because they choose to decide what is good or bad, right or wrong. That’s their vision of their world, but they run into problems when they come against someone else’s vision of right and wrong, or even the laws in the country they live in.

Could it be that there is a day of reckoning coming? I would argue that each of those world views is as impossible as mine in expecting to go to America by train. Maybe we need to think about our world view and challenge ourselves as to where it came from. Have we really thought it through carefully or just absorbed the prevailing opinion in our media and culture? Perhaps it’s worth thinking about how we are traveling through life.

Gracious Father, help us to understand your values and to have a Christian world view, not one distorted by the society we live in. In Jesus name we pray.
