Singing Praises

“Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.”
1 Chronicles 16:9 (NIV)

Do you ever do this? I’m sure you do. How often do we find ourselves humming, singing quietly, or loudly, a favourite hymn, tune or song as we go about our daily business? We can even sing silently in our heads. It’s great isn’t it? We have these biblical references brought to us via songs and hymns which lift us, help us, strengthen and encourage us. Remember the example of Paul in Acts 16:25, “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” If you think about it we have prisoners all around us blinded in darkness (2 Corinthians 4:4). Maybe they will hear us and be influenced for better in some way. Who knows? Hymns, what a glorious antidote to so much of the negative secular songs that bombard us everywhere we go.

There is also the teaching aspect of singing, the reminding, the reflecting on the words, the admonishing: “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts” (Colossians 3:16).

Then there is the satisfaction of the spontaneity and pure joy of singing praise to our great and awesome God, saying with King David, “I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night” (Psalm 63:4-6).

Night or day, let’s not deprive ourselves of joy, praising, teaching and learning by singing and praising our Lord God Almighty as we travel on our daily journey in Christ.

O Lord our God, let us sing praises to you. We give thanks that we can do this and desire that others will know your ways including singing praises to you. In Jesus’ great and glorious name we pray.
