Jesus Christ And Him Crucified

“For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
1 Corinthians 2:2 (NKJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” There was a time Paul hated the very name of Jesus Christ and was on the way to Damascus, so that if he found any who were of ‘The Way’, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Paul made havoc in the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison (Acts 9:2 & 8:3 *note: Saul later became known as Paul). But after his conversion he preached Jesus and “vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ” (Acts 18:28). Again, he was very positive and bold, saying, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for anyone who believes…in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith” (Romans 1:16-17).

What about me? Have I learnt any thing from the teachings of the Apostle Paul? According to the scriptures, the ‘old man’ is crucified and I am a new creation. Reading in Romans.6:6, “knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin” and Galatians 5:24, “those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” we can say, “God forbid that I should glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation” (Romans 6:14-15). I confess my weakness, however the spirit is willing and I strive to bring honour and glory to our Father, who has raised Jesus and given Him the glory that He had from the beginning.

Jesus’ suffering was foreordained as we read in Acts 2:23-24: “Him, being delivered by the determined counsel and fore-knowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.” It may seem cruel to us, but the wisdom of God saw that this was the only way we could be justified and sanctified through the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ by whom all things were created. For by grace are we saved through the faith in Jesus, not by our works, it is the gift of God, lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

We crucified Him, God glorified Him.

Father, I thank You for this great sacrifice of Your Son to save us from our sins. We cannot comprehend the pain inflicted upon our Saviour on the cross which He endured on our behalf, becoming sin for us. In Jesus’ name I pray.
