Your Accent Gives You Away

“After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, ‘Surely you are one of them too; for even your [Galilean] accent gives you away.’”
Matthew 26:73 (AMP)

Not long ago I was on my way to Harlesden. As I approached the bus stop, there was a man sitting and waiting for the bus. As I got closer to him he asked me which country I am from, but before I could finish my sentence he said. “I know. You are from Barbados.” I asked him how he knew. He said to me, “Your accent gave you away.”

Straightaway, the incident with Peter in Matthew 26 came to mind. The NLV rendition of Matthew 26:73 says, “For sure, you are one of them. You talk like they do.” The bystanders knew he was a Disciple of Jesus because of his accent. What was so distinctive about Peter’s accent that made him so recognisable? One commentary states that although there were many dialects and languages spoken in the region due to Roman occupation, Peter’s Galilean accent was recognisable. Some say that the Galileans interchanged the pronunciation of several Aramaic letters, dividing or blending words in ways that made them unintelligible to others.

Later, after the resurrection, the religious leaders were astonished that Peter could speak so powerfully since Peter and John were unschooled, ordinary men. We read about this in Acts 4:13 (AMP), “Now when the men of the Sanhedrin (Jewish High Court) saw the confidence and boldness of Peter and John, and grasped the fact that they were uneducated and untrained (ordinary) men, they were astounded, and began to recognize that they had been with Jesus.”

Our accent may give us away as to which country we come from, but let’s make sure that our speech shows that we walk with Jesus as well.

Prayer
Eternal God, we thank you that the day will come when there will be one pure language as it is prophesied, but in the meantime may our language show our Christianity. In the name of Jesus’ Christ we pray.
Amen
