Daniel in the Den of the Lions

“So the king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. But the king spoke, saying to Daniel, ‘Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.’”
Daniel 6:16 (NKJV)

There are stories well known to the children, such as that of Samson killing the roaring lion and king David in his youth killing a lion and a bear bare-handed and rescuing his lambs from their mouths. But perhaps the most well known is that of Daniel in the lions den. The King, Darius, loved Daniel because he was faithful and of excellent spirit and Darius wanted him to be over all the realm. But the advisors, the counsellors, the governors and the administrators of the kingdom were jealous and angry, and plotted against Daniel. They persuaded the king to sign a decree, which if any one disregarded they would be thrown in the den of lions. Daniel, as his custom was, prayed to his God and was found guilty of disobeying the law of the Medes and Persians. The King had no choice but to carry out his command. However, Daniel was protected by God. King Darius was pleased and declared that the God whom Daniel served was the Living God who works wonders and has delivered Daniel from the lions. Those who accused Daniel, their wives and children were cast into the lions den, and the lions broke all their bones in pieces before they even reached the bottom of the den.

When I was in Kenya I saw roaring lions in their natural habitat from close range while sitting in the safety of a vehicle. I have also seen them behind the bars in the zoo. But the time is coming according to Isaiah 11:6, when a child and the lamb will play together with the lions and the bears.

I know of another roaring lion whom I have not seen, but who is very real and is ready to pounce upon his victim. 1 Peter 5:8 says our adversary, the Devil, whom we must resist, is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. In contrast, our Saviour the Lamb of God, is referred to as the Lion of Judah in Revelation 5:5. He has destroyed the works of the Devil and given us victory over Satan.

We know Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is coming in His glory, power and majesty to take over the kingdoms of this world and put in chains the adversary of God and mankind— the roaring lion, Satan the Devil, but who now is full of wrath, for he knows his time is short (Revelation 12:12).

This is a greatest story the world must hear and rejoice in the salvation God has offered.

Gracious Father, I thank You for Your plan of salvation. You have all the power to deliver us from the jaws of the lion we have to face every day. I pray and praise You in Jesus’ name.
