Not Good Enough!

“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of Godhaving a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”
2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NIV)

I’m a teacher and recently the school got all its pupils to review and rate their teachers. I wasn’t worried – until I saw the reviews! Most of them were nice, but sadly, some pupils felt I really just wasn’t good enough. I went from devastated to hopping mad – how dare they?

Fortunately scripture was close at hand (see header scripture) to comfort me. ‘Aaah,’ I reassured myself, ‘it is because it is the end of times—they will just never be happy.’

I set myself this scripture as my memory verse for the week as I thought it would be a source of encouragement. It wasn’t! As I went to bed contemplating this section of scripture – especially after I’d been walking my most self-righteous of days, my most bossy and superior of days, I realised certain descriptions in the scripture applied directly to me. Yikes!

Am I one of these people fellow believers are advised to have nothing to do with? I certainly hope not. Thank God that Jesus came to forgive our sins! I am most especially thankful that he came to transform lives – mine in particular (I think). We can take encouragement in the fact that perfection and pleasing everyone is unattainable but that God loves us perfectly regardless of this.

Lord, let us not add to the discomfort of the world by being amongst those difficult people the apostle Paul describes in 2nd Timothy chapter 3. Thank you that you can transform our lives and make all things new. In Jesus’ Name.
