Love is the Greatest

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV)

Sometimes it seems there is very little genuine love in this world. The love the world exercises is human love which is philia, the greek work for brotherly love.

But the love we receive from God is agape love that emanates from the Father. It is an out-going love, all encompassing, and which is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). Ephesians 3:18-19 speaks of this Godly love: “That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend…what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” That love of God is fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10) and it is the bond of perfection (Colossians 3:14).

Love is the greatest because the scriptures reveal that even if one is a brilliant orator, has the gift of prophesy, understands all mysteries and has the faith to move mountains, without love it is all vanity.Though one gives away all his possessions to feed the poor, it profits nothing without love. True love is patient, kind, not envious, nor rude, does not get easily angered, thinks no evil, rejoices in truth—love never fails, because God is Love (1 Corinthians 13:1-8 & 1 John 4:8).

God demonsrated His love by sending His Son as the Lamb of God, who willingly laid down His life for all mankind (John3:16). That is pure agape love of the Father and the Son. The Father loves us with the same love as He loved His beloved Son (John 17:23).

Love is pefect. Love is the greatest. There is a hymn that sings, “If I have not charity, then I am as nothing…But among the three of these (faith, hope, love), charity is greatest.”

Abba, Father, thank You for sharing Your love with mankind. Help us to love You with all our hearts and minds and with all our strength. This I ask in Jesus’ name.
