Participate in His Incarnation

“And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception)…For out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favour upon favour, and gift heaped upon gift].
John 1:14, 16

John’s account of the birth of Jesus doesn’t supply us with the same physical details as Matthew’s and Luke’s Gospels do. Instead, John begins by explaining to his readership, probably a mixture of Jewish and Gentile Christians, about who Jesus was “before the world existed” (John 17:5), the Word now made flesh.

In so doing he makes it clear that Jesus began his earthly existence by being both fully divine and fully human. He did not begin by being human and then at some point becoming God. Rather, from eternity he was the Word, who “was with God, and the Word was God Himself” (John 1:1).

Just as Jesus shared in our humanity, so we are called to share in His Spirit-led incarnate life, and John’s description above gives some clues as to how this is expressed. John explains that Jesus walked among the people, dispensing his blessing as he went.

This Christmas and New Year, whatever we think, do or say, let’s remember Jesus, the Incarnate Word, who through the Spirit, dwells in us, and let’s participate in His Incarnation. Through us, let Jesus walk among our family, friends, neighbours, workmates and acquaintances. Let’s include everyone, even if some would reject us.

Out of His fullness within us, let’s heap upon others grace upon grace, blessing upon blessing, favour upon favour, and gift upon gift.

Thank you, for your Son, Jesus, the Incarnate Word. Help us please to participate in the spirit of His Incarnation. In Jesus
’ name.
