Amazing Gifts

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
James 1:17 (NKJV)

Christmas is a time of giving and receiving gifts. We may receive gifts from our friends and family, but the best gifts of all are from above—from God. Let’s look at some of these gifts:

All believers in Jesus Christ have been given the gift of a holy loving relationship with the triune God, as it says in 1 Corinthians 1:9, “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord”, a calling which cannot be revoked or rescinded! (Romans 11:29). This calling is a gift from God the Father, who loves to give. Our calling is not a gift that we ask for, but all are predestined to receive—it is God’s decision, not ours. Romans 8:30 says, “Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.” When is in God’s hands, but our response is in ours.

Being justified or made righteous is also a gift from God the Father of lights (Romans 3: 21-24). Those who are believers have received these amazing gifts without asking for them. They do not deserve them, have not earned them and certainly did not qualify for them by doing good works. It is all as a result of the great love and grace that the Father has lavished on them!

And the best is yet to come: Our glorification at the resurrection, when we are given brand new bodies that will live forever! As amazing as our present physical bodies are despite all the aches and pains and limitations, it does not compare to our future glorification and eternal life—a gift from God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 1 Peter 2:9-10 tells us, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.”

Amazing gifts!

Thank you, Father, for these special gifts that You have bestowed on us who trust in You. Thank You for the gift of faith that enables us to believe. In Jesus’ name we pray.
