Live Long And Prosper

“Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land…”
Deuteronomy 5:33 (NIV)

“Dif-tor heh smusma.” Have I been learning Hebrew? No it’s Vulcan and it means ‘live long and prosper,’ the greeting given by Mr. Spock in Star Trek to fellow Vulcans.

On investigation I was disappointed to learn that Mr. Spock was NOT, in fact Vulcan. He was Jewish. I then further learned that his greeting wasn’t Vulcan either! That too had its roots in his Jewish religion and had been taken from the above scripture. These words were given to the Israelites by Moses prior to entering the promised land. God proclaimed a Covenant of love (Deuteronomy 7:12-15). If the Israelites kept His commands, He would bless them.

Are we blessed with long life and prosperity for obedience? Does God deal with us in this way today? He may decide to bless us in this way, but He may not. No, the blessings He gives us are much greater and longer lasting. In John 10:10 (ESV) Jesus says “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” And in John 5:24 (ESV), “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” These are the blessings that Jesus came to give us—abundant life now, and eternal life in His Kingdom.

The Israelites did enter their promised land but after a few short years were removed. When we enter the promised Kingdom, which Jesus will give to those who believe in Him, it will be for ever.

So if you meet a Vulcan and he greets you with ‘live long and prosper,’ be sure to give the correct Vulcan response, ‘peace and long life’. I don’t know what Vulcans believe about the future, but I do know that those who belong to Jesus will be blessed with peace and everlasting life with their Saviour.

Prayer
Dear Father, thank you for the blessings you give us now in this life and thank you that we can look forward to the blessings of your kingdom to come where there will be peace and life everlasting.
Amen
