Sex Education

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image…’ So God created man in His own image…male and female He created them.”
Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV)

With the recent controversial government report ‘Relationships and Sex Education: The Way Forward’ Christians are concerned about what is being taught about sex education and healthy relationships in schools. There is no dearth of sex education books. Some may be helpful, but they are almost all based on the human perspective. For me the best guide book on sex education is the Holy Bible, and so the best place to start sex education is to begin at the beginning.

It was God who designed our human bodies. Adam and Eve were the first humans, first of a kind to reproduce their kind and replenish the earth. They were naked in the privacy of the garden of Eden, no one around, where they were to spend their married life (Genesis 2:24-25). When they sinned and were put out of their beautiful home, they became aware of their nakedness and were ashamed, but God made tunics of skin and clothed them. In time they had children and their children had children and we who dwell on this earth today are all the progeny of Adam and Eve (Acts 17:26).

God designed our bodies—we are wonderfully and marvelously formed, a miracle itself. To me, it is a greater miracle than the physical universe which is probably lifeless, while we have life. God is so concerned about His creation, especially mankind, that He gave good principles with respect to marriage in Ephesians 5:22-32. Many husbands and wives enjoy peaceful family life as they follow these guidelines.

In today’s society, many follow their own principles with respect to married or unmarried life and are reaping penalties such as divorces and misery for the children. Responsible parents can teach their children basic knowledge about sex revealed in the Bible. The world has strayed away from the ideal marriage, one man one wife as Jesus taught in Matthew 19:5-6. God in His great wisdom has revealed the deep intimate relationship of the marriage union, for example in the Song of Solomon.

The Bible gives us broad but basic understanding of the difference between male and female. There is no shame in discussing the reproductive system which God has endowed to mankind. It was good in His sight. A proper sex relationship in marriage is pleasing to God as he created it and called his creation good telling Adam and Eve to replenish the earth.

Before God we are all naked. It was sin that brought shame in the Garden of Eden. Parents can save their children from the world’s perverted view of sex, which is very confusing for them. It will help them to know that God is the Divine designer of our bodies, and learn from God’s Word of the proper use of sex in loving marriage.

Heavenly Father who formed us in your image and likeness, I praise you and thank you for creating us so wonderfully and fearfully. I love you and adore you in Jesus’ name.
