Are Atheists Intolerant?

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”
Matthew 7:1-2 (NKJV)

From our previous two articles you will know the answer is Yes! But how do we arrive at that conclusion? Atheists accuse Christians of intolerance but this short series aims to show that they should be looking in a mirror when they make such accusations.

What is intolerance? It is an unwillingness to accept, or endure views, beliefs, or behaviour that differs from your own. It is also a determination to refuse to allow others the freedom to express and believe in something you do not accept.

It is fair to say that Christians, except for a small minority, are generally tolerant of other religions and beliefs. We do not hate or despise atheists but rather patiently love them as potential children of God, even if they don’t know or accept that at present. But can you say that atheists are tolerant of Christians and Christianity? Lets hear how they feel in their own words. Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens are both well known prophets of atheist belief. So how tolerant are these words from each of them?
“If I could wave a magic wand and get rid of either rape or religion, I would not hesitate to get rid of religion.” – Sam Harris.
“Some propositions are so dangerous that it may even be ethical to kill people for believing them.” – Sam Harris.
“All faith claims are…equally rotten, false, dishonest, corrupt, humourless, and dangerous.” – Christopher Hitchens.
“I think religion should be treated with ridicule, hatred, and contempt, and I claim that right.” – Christopher Hitchens.

Not much tolerance in those blunt comments and you can soon find many more examples. You can check out these statements on the internet and if you search the web you will find numerous atheist run sites with titles like, “Christians are disgusting;” “ All religion is evil,” “Is there such a thing as an intelligent believer?” and “Religion must be destroyed.”

Look for yourself at what is an incredible orgy of rage, hatred and intolerance! We could add many other examples but surely the point is made. Atheists are tolerant if you agree with their views, but dare to disagree, to have a Christian worldview, and the intolerance of many in the atheist community pours out like a tide of sewage.

Loving Father, help us as Christians to avoid the sin of intolerance ourselves, not to judge or condemn others, and to patiently wait for the return of Jesus Christ, when the minds of all humanity will be opened. In Jesus’ name we pray.
