The Messiah Prophecies Fulfilled

“Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete.
Matthew 5:17 (The Complete Jewish Bible)

God sent his Son, Jesus, to bring about the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah. The Greek word for Messiah is Christ. There would be no one else to look to for their fulfilment. To emphasize this Jesus himself, explained that neither the smallest letter or the smallest stroke of a scribal pen would be erased from the Old Testament until everything “that must happen has happened” (Matthew 5:18).

It was important for Jesus to explain his position in regard to the Law because his listeners revered the Law almost to the point of idolizing it, especially the decalogue, which, according to Exodus 34:28, was the centrality of the Old Covenant: “Moshe (Moses) was there with Adonai (God) forty days and forty nights, during which time he neither ate food nor drank water. [Adonai] wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Words (Commandments).” It is this covenant that becomes obsolete because of the new covenant, “By using the term, ‘new,’ he has made the first covenant ‘old’; and something being made old, something in the process of aging, is on its way to vanishing altogether” (Hebrews 8:13).

When, however, it came to the fulfilment of the OT prophecies concerning the Messiah, Jesus would complete all of them. Jesus told his disciples, “This is what I meant when I was still with you and told you that everything written about me in the Torah of Moshe, the Prophets and the Psalms had to be fulfilled” (Luke 24:44).

Thank you, Father, that you sent your Son, Jesus, to fulfil in detail the prophecies concerning the Messiah, and that he is our anointed Saviour. In Jesus
’ name.
