Prepare the Way

“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”
Revelation 22:20 (ESV)

The most exciting event in all of history will be the return of Jesus Christ to planet earth. His first coming approximately 2000 years ago was the most eventful. God, the creator, came to rescue humanity from death, the wages of sin (Romans 6:23). There has not been any event greater than what Jesus accomplished on the Cross.

John the Baptist was assigned the task of preparation for Jesus’ first coming. “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways…” (Luke 1:76).

There are several reasons why the return of Jesus Christ will be the most exciting event in all of human history: When Christ returns, he will not be alone. There will be an angelic host accompanying him. Spiritual beings that we have never seen with our eyes. Also with them will be our brothers and sisters in Christ who have died, including some of our family members! I am looking forward to meeting my parents, who died as believers. And how about meeting many of the characters written about in the Bible!

When Christ returns, not if, but when! He will also set about creating new heavens and a new earth (Revelation 21:1, 5). And he is going to involve the children of God in what he plans to do. John the Baptist is not alive today to prepare the way for the Second Coming. That task has been assigned to the Church, the Body of Christ. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). The beginning of the most exciting event in mankind’s history, the return of Jesus Christ.

Prayer
Thank you, Father, for the amazing future that you have prepared for those who love you. Please enable us to fix our eyes on Jesus as we prepare the way for his return.
Amen
