Everything Will Be Alright

“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed…Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.”
2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 16 (NKJV)

Sometimes even Christians have times when they feel God is not near and they are alone and helpless. Can you imagine how the disciples felt when Jesus told them that he was going away and that they could not come with him? (John 13:33). Jesus, who could heal the sick, raise the dead, feed the hungry, calm the storm and teach them the words of life—was going to leave them? At this time his disciples would have followed him and spent their lives together for 3 years and more, so this was shocking and very troubling to them.

Then Jesus reassured them—‘Don’t worry, everything will be alright!’ The NKJV translation says, “Let not your hearts be troubled” (John 14:1). And he went on to tell them about the Holy Spirit that he would send to be their comforter, their advocate, their helper; who would remind them of all that Jesus had taught them, and who would lead and guide them into the future as Jesus dwelt within them (John 14:16, 20 & 26).

He told them he was going to come again (John 14:3) and in the meantime they were to love one another. “‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:33-35). If we love one another we are His disciples and our future is secure in the hands of Jesus.

Heavenly Father, may the Holy Spirit lead us in the Way, the Truth, and the Life that your Word reveals through Jesus Christ Your son. The Way of Love that shows we are His Disciples. Then we can know that in the end ‘everything will be alright’!
