The Enduring Word

“The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.

Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV)

In the past few months we’ve witnessed dramatic changes in seasonal weather in many parts of the world. Our garden is still recovering despite the recent rains. We’ve seen the grass dry up and the flowers lose their vibrant colours.

In Isaiah 40 the prophet explains how permanent the Word of God is compared to the vagaries of the weather. Be comforted by this, he says. Also, in a way we are like the grass that withers and all our beauty will fade away like that of a flower, but our hope is in the constancy of who God is and in his enduring Word.

Many centuries later the apostle Peter picked up on Isaiah’s comments, and linked them to the gospel message—“’But the word of the Lord endures forever.’ Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:25).

Despite all that is happening around us and despite the frailty of life, we can take hope because God’s Word and the Gospel of Jesus are everlasting.

Thank you, Father, for your enduring word by which the Gospel of Jesus has been preached to us. In Jesus
’ name.
