“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

There’s a story about a church member who noticed that the minister had TGIF embroidered on his socks. Later she approached his wife and said; “I was wondering why your husband has TGIF—“Thank goodness it’s Friday” on his hosiery. The minister’s wife replied “Oh no! That’s not what it stands for—it stands for—“Toes go in first!”

But I have another translation for this cryptic four letter abbreviation and it is this–“Today God Is First!”

I don’t know about you but sometimes I have days when this is just not true! Things to do, some places to go, shopping, cleaning, gardening, etc, there is always something, unfortunately, and I’m sure you too have this problem from time to time.

Each day we are challenged to put God first in our lives, to rely on his strength to be the source of all our victories on a daily basis. Paul, as usual hits the nail squarely on the head when he writes, “Now to him who by his power within us is able to do infinitely more than we ever dare to ask or imagine—to Him be glory in the church through Christ Jesus for ever and ever, amen!” (Ephesians 3:20-21 Phillips—italics mine). Notice it’s “His power within us” that accomplishes this—nothing that we can conjure up on our own has the clout to bring about these victories! Our yielded hearts and minds, in other words putting him first in our lives, is the only solution! To back this solution up, Paul reminds the church at Philippi that, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13 NLT).

With this example in mind and the awareness that we are very frail and fragile things as humans, we need to give ourselves completely to this indwelling power that conquerors all. So much so that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us” (Romans 8:37). Remember, we are God’s masterpiece and as such, a work in progress! There’s no limit to what he can do if our mantra is “Today God Is First!”

Almighty Father, help us to put you first every day and allow you to do your will in our lives as we yield to your Spirit of grace.
