Dog-Paddle Days

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrew 4:16 (NKJV)

My dog, Darley, is a wonderful dog. He’s out and about like all dogs. He’s particular about water. He loves to go in, but not to swim. He paddles about in the water rather joyfully but won’t do anything that involves swimming.

So we have tried to encourage him to swim in various places, but not only does he not want to swim, he won’t! So it was quite a surprise last year, around January, he was trotting along the Thames path by the river, when he fell in. It was a slight flooding that blurred where the edge of the bank was, and so he fell right in.

I immediately went over to him but he was swimming in the water! I pulled him out and he dried off in the usual way. So he can swim after all! What was all that about?

I wonder if you, dear reader, have the same trouble. Do you paddle about on the shore, never venturing into the water? If you can’t swim, then there are many places where you can learn. Do you, like Darley, never wish to learn?

And then speaking in spiritual terms, Christians can often be like Darley. They think they can’t swim (think pray, witness, lead worship, etc.), when in reality they can. We are encouraged to be bold; we are the children of the God of the universe. I recommend not waiting to fall in the deep end—have a go now.

Heavenly Father, we can learn every day from our surroundings. So often we are minded to hide our Christianity from others when there is no need to. We are your children, Father, and need to be assuming your nature, your courage and boldness. We need your help, and humbly we ask for it. In Jesus’ name we pray.
