A Caring Church

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NIVUK)

What kind of church would you like your congregation to be? In the book of Philippians Paul discusses church life, and explains that it should be modelled on the mind of Christ. “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus,” he says (Philippians 2:5).

He explains exactly what he means by that. Jesus put others before himself. He sacrificed himself for others. He put his own comfort to one side for the sake of other people. He decided not to cling to a position of power but rather to place himself on the same level as other people in order to serve them. That is the mindset of Jesus.

This mindset is what church is all about. It’s a place of safety for people of all ages and backgrounds where they can feel valued by how we Christians treat them. This is what Paul is saying in the leading verse above. Let’s value others above ourselves. Stop following our own personal ambitious agendas that would advance ourselves in some way. Give newcomers and “old-comers” a welcoming smile when they come to church. Keep an eye out for others and for what they need. Encourage them. Listen to their interests more than expounding our own. In this way we have union with the mindset of Jesus Christ.

Is this not the kind of church we’d like? Paul’s point is that it starts with our relationship with Jesus. Let the mind of Christ be in us. Let the love of Jesus flow through us to others.

If we want to change our church, let’s begin by having the mindset of Jesus Christ.

Holy Father, help me please, through your Spirit, to have the mindset of Jesus Christ, and thereby to look out for the interests of others. In Jesus
’ name.
