A Special Mention

“Come, bless God, all you servants of God! You priests of God, posted to the nightwatch in God’s shrine, lift your praising hands to the Holy Place, and bless God. In turn, may God of Zion bless you—God who made heaven and earth!
Psalm 134 (MSG)

Psalm 134 is just three verses; it’s the second shortest of the psalms. But it’s especially for the night workers in the temple. In the tabernacle Aaron and his sons were instructed to make sure that the lamp burnt all through the night. In the temple there were Levites who were on duty at night and whilst the world slept there were watchmen on patrol. In the second temple the exact duties of the two hundred and forty priests and Levites who made up the nightly guard were carefully laid out and recorded in Rabbinical literature.

Nightfall had come, the worshippers had gone home and the temple was quiet. There might have been singing practice after the evening sacrifice was over, and then later, just the patrols doing their rounds through the night to see that all was safe and secure. It would have been a tough time to work, in the dark silent hours of night and maybe also in the cold of a winter, their footsteps echoing through the empty spaces. This psalm is a particular encouragement to those who serve at these taxing and challenging times, out of the limelight, unseen by most people who are asleep, but seen and blessed by God.

And us? We are a royal priesthood, called to serve in the temple that is now the church of God. We too have been called to follow in the steps of the night workers to offer prayer and praise on behalf of all in a dark and slumbering world. God’s special encouragement to the night-watch is for us today too.

Our Father, the God who made heaven and earth, our thanks to you who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing.
May we not cease to respond to you with praise in the darkness of this world.
