Free at Last!

“Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.”
Romans 8:23 (NIV)

Americans celebrate the Fourth of July as their national Independence Day. Liberated people always remember the day of their liberation! I’d like to share the accounts of a Jewish man who was set free from bondage in Belsen concentration camp, during the latter part of WW2. Here are his thoughts about that amazing day:

Paul Trepman writes: “April 15th 1945 was like any other day—but not to us. We were reborn on that day, few of us believed that we would not actually survive and see freedom again. As to the outside world, it counted us among the dead martyrs, and had already put a tombstone over our graves. It is a strange feeling being reborn at a mature age, normally people do not remember details of the day of their birth, of course—but we do—all the details of April 15th 1945! A new life sprung up from the filth and ashes of the liberated camps. When the British army entered Belsen concentration camp, some of us fainted for sheer joy but most of us had no strength to celebrate. We survivors will always remember that day as a second birthday—perhaps in a sense more important than the first!”

Christians have a dream today—a dream of a future promised by God, who cannot lie. And John, the great friend and Apostle of Jesus Christ, shares this vision and dream with all of us today in Revelation 21:1-5: “Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’”

Our freedom is waiting in the wings ready to be revealed one day!

Prayer
Father, in a very dark world we wait for our freedom, for our liberation from the shackles of this flesh as you have promised.
Amen
