Stay Active Spiritually

“Do not quench the Spirit.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NKJV)

Whilst on vacation I read a report about how inactivity reduces oxygen to the brain. It was written by a German researcher. It suggests that holidays to sweltering destinations can affect negatively how we function mentally. Too much heat and the resultant dehydration may limit our capacity to think. And the associated inactivity just makes matters worse. A cheerful thought, isn’t it?

It reminds me of a metaphor in the Bible. Paul told us not to quench the Spirit. Don’t let the life the Spirit imparts dry up within us. In other words, be active. Pray, study, talk with other believers, go to church, sing praises to God. In his letter to the Thessalonians Paul had just reminded them to “Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing…to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks.” (verse 11 & 16).

If we don’t engage in those things, maybe we won’t thrive spiritually. Don’t quench the Spirit but live by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

Help us in our lives, Father in Heaven, not to quench the Spirit by either inactivity or wrong activity, but to live by and manifest the fruits of the Spirit.
