Leaflets & Mansions

“In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”
John 14:2 (NKJV)

Although I am retired, I have an occasional job which involves delivering leaflets in the village where I live. I don’t do it for the money but for the exercise, as it gives me a purpose to go out walking. There are 350 houses on my round. Around 230 are normal sized houses in one part of the village and around 120 are mansions on the more expensive side of the village. Because the 230 houses have short drives, some are semi detached and all are close together, I can do those faster than I can do the 120 mansions. All the mansions have long drives, some of them uphill, and are well set back from the road with large gardens. They are a lot bigger than the average house, all have double or treble garages and I would guess between 5 and 8 bedrooms.

As I walk up and down the drives of these beautiful mansions I can’t help admiring them. They are magnificent symbols of the worldly success of their owners. But as impressive as they are, all they remind me of is the verse above. Because whatever Christ meant when he talked about mansions, you can be sure it will be far superior to anything we can imagine here on earth. Other translations use rooms or dwelling places in place of the word mansions.

I can’t help wondering if we can sometimes get too focused on the problems and pressures of this world and not think enough about the incredible future that is ahead of us. So it’s great to be delivering leaflets to these huge houses and thinking how awesome a mansion, a room or a dwelling place prepared by God for me, for all Christians, will be. How exciting our future is when you read scriptures like 1 Corinthians 2:9, “But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love him.’” Whatever we can think, visualise or imagine, it will not even come close to the awesome future that God is preparing for us.

I hope, in your life, whether it’s something you are aware of regularly, or occasionally, there is some simple, everyday activity which triggers an awareness of a scripture that lifts you from our humdrum, day by day routine, and transports you into thinking about our awesome God and incredible future. Delivering leaflets occasionally is a pretty routine humdrum job, but it gets me daydreaming about the future in a positive and uplifting way.

Gracious Father, who are we that you have created us for a relationship and a future with you that will exceed anything we can dream about or visualise in our physical life? Thank you for your love and concern for us. In Jesus’ name we pray.
