Are You A Disciple Of Jesus?

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13:35 (NKJV)

The word ‘disciple’ has many aspects—student, adherent, attendant, convert, devotee, learner, enthusiast, supporter, admirer, believer, trainee—and all these words describe how we feel about our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Fellow-learner shows that we want to learn from the teachings of Jesus. In John 8:31 Jesus said to those who believe in him, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” We are students of the Word of God, learning the way of love—a trainee for the Kingdom.

As a follower, we need to be actively practising what we learn. Not like a ‘follower’ or supporter of a football team or pop group, who sits back and watches what they do with interest, but like it says in James 1:25, not just a hearer, but a doer.

A Fan wants to go see and hear their idol, but rarely has the opportunity to actually spend time with the object of their adoration. Our hero died, yet was resurrected and lives in us through his Spirit. As a devotee, admirer and imitator, we represent Jesus to the world as his Ambassadors. Our actions show how fantastic our hero is—“This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (John 15:8).

He is our Friend and guide and, as his disciples, we can have complete faith and trust in him (John 15:15).

Prayer
We pray that our lives will show that we are your disciples. That we will show we are fellow-learners, followers, fans and friends of Jesus Christ by the love we express daily.
Amen
