When The Words Won’t Come

“And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
Romans 8:27 (NIV)

No matter how vociferous or gregarious some of us may appear, there are times when words fail us. High emotion often renders us speechless–joy, sorrow, fear—the words simply won’t come.

There are joyous milestones in our lives, such as a special moment seeing God’s spectacular creation, an experience of romantic love, being there at a new birth, or a longed-for reunion that leave us without words. Of course, there are sad milestones that also cause us to be lost for words, the most obvious being loss. Then there are the times when fear renders us speechless, a situation may arise when we just don’t know how to give an answer. Jesus gave a promise for this very occasion in Luke 21:15, “For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.”

What about the times we want to tell God how we feel but the words won’t come? We struggle with emotion trying to find the words and giving up in frustration. If only we had someone who could translate our feelings into words.

Now for the good news. The Holy Spirit is our Advocate, interceding on our behalf. What this means is that God knows precisely how we feel and extends His love to us without us having to say a word. Naturally when we do have words we should use them to ‘talk’ to God –thanking Him, praising Him, entreating Him.

The comforting promise comes when words fail us—God does not.

Loving Father, thank you for knowing our hearts and our thoughts. Thank you for filling our every need which includes the times when words fail us.
