What A Shock!

“After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. ‘Men of Galilee,’ they said ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’”
Acts 1:9-11 (NIV)

How would you feel if there was a risk of getting an electric shock when you turned your lights on or off? Say for 499 times there was no problem but the 500th time, boom, you get a powerful electric shock! How would you feel about that, would you take the risk? Of course not, you would call in an electrician and get the problem fixed. The last thing you would want is the risk of an electric shock!

But what shocks you about the world in which we live? On a global scale were you shocked by the election of President Trump in America and worried about what he might do? Did President Putin of Russia shock you as he unleashed his bombers and troops in Syria? Does President Assad shock you as he ruthlessly fights to retain power in Syria? What about ISIS and their treatment of Christians and even other Muslims who don’t agree with them?

On a national level are you shocked by the lack of vision our politicians, of all parties, have shown in respect of our energy policy, or rather the lack of one? Are you shocked by the enormous national debt our politicians have allowed to accumulate over the last 20 years? You could list so many other things on a national or local level that are shocking in our society, our culture today, but are we still shocked by them? For example 50 years ago there was virtually no swearing on Radio or Television, but today there is so much, it has lost the power to shock and we just accept it.

So if you are still shocked by events worldwide, nationally or locally, where do you look for a solution? Who is the equivalent of the electrician you call to fix your lights? The answer is one far greater than any human being, because it is God you call. Knowing God does not stop the world being a shocking place, but it leads to the understanding that God has a plan and purpose for all humanity today. I expect the disciples had quite a shock when they saw Jesus levitate from the Mount of Olives! And for many today who either don’t believe or who denigrate God, the return of Jesus Christ, which is absolutely sure and certain, will be the biggest shock of their lives!

Gracious and loving Father, please reveal yourself to all humanity and speed the return of Jesus Christ for the sake of all those who are suffering in this shocking world today. In Jesus’ name we pray.
