Spiritual Realities

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV)

There was an incident in my life that is etched on my memory. If the outcome was different, I would not be writing this devotional today! It happened in Woolwich, London, several years ago when I was younger. I was working as a Hod Carrier (labourer) for bricklayers building army houses. I was alone on the third floor preparing a section of wall for the bricklayers. Several concrete blocks were in place ready for the bricklayers, and as I placed some bricks, suddenly, the whole thing collapsed to the ground floor, including me! I ended up covered in concrete blocks and bricks, my shoes disappeared, I could not move and I was not wearing a hard hat. It was not compulsory in those days. An ambulance was called. The same day I walked away from the hospital with a minor graze on my leg.

This incident always remind me of the scripture in Luke 4:10–11, which was a quote from Psalm 91:11-12, “For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone (or a concrete block or brick!).’” Thankfully, God was not ready to call me home. Too many rough edges needed to be trimmed! I believe that we all have guardian angels assigned to look after us, and mine was galvanized into action on that fateful day. But we do not see these amazing beings with our physical eyes, which have not been designed to discern spiritual realities. Maybe you have experienced a similar situation.

The physical world that we see and experience is temporary, transient and always changing: “Those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). Whereas the spiritual world that we cannot see has been a reality for longer than the present world in which we live. That world comprises God—Father, Son and Spirit; as well as the holy angels, including the one that I will have to thank one day for helping to save my life! In that spiritual world, also dwells Satan, the devil and the fallen angels (demons), our enemies who hate humanity.

There may be other spiritual realities that we have no knowledge about, because God is not ready to reveal them to us. “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12). God knows everything about us. We are ‘fully known’—from birth to death, nothing is hidden from his eyes (Hebrews 4:13), but the realities of the spiritual world are hidden from our eyes until revealed by the Spirit as it says in 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 “What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.”

God—Father, Son and Spirit, thank you for the love and care that you have for us your children, in assigning your faithful angels to look out for and guard our ways. In Jesus’ name we pray.
