Standing On The Promises

“…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6 (NIVUK)

”Standing On The Promises” is a well known and much loved hymn with very positive and encouraging lyrics. The following lyrics are from verse two: Standing on the promises that cannot fail, When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living Word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God.

God’s word is living and active as we read in Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” We can confidently rely on every promise of God. Isaiah 55:11 assures us, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

So what about the amazing promise that God gave to us who believe in Jesus Christ. To complete the “good work” he began in each of us? To start with, we are not the ones responsible to complete that work. It is God’s responsibility. He has the tools and knows exactly what is required. God is forming the image of Jesus Christ in each of us. We have different personalities, but all with the same Christ-like nature. “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.” (Galatians 4:19).

When you think about what God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—is doing in each of us, it is very exciting. It is not something that we can do apart from God. Do we have a role in this amazing work? Yes. It is to believe and trust God to do what he has promised. “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Even the faith or trust in the promises of God that we have is a gift from the Father.

Prayer
Father in heaven, thank you for the wonderful promises in the Bible. Please help us to remember them and apply them to the various circumstances we encounter in life. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
