G_ _ _ _ _

“Give to others, and you will receive. You will be given much. It will be poured into your hands—more than you can hold. You will be given so much that it will spill into your lap. The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.”
Luke 6:38 (ERV)

In this short series of six studies we are going to be looking at the word GROWTH, taking each letter to look at what we can learn about our growth as Christians from it.

The first letter, G, stands for Giving.

Immediately we think in terms of money. Of course giving financially, within our means, when we have the opportunity to do so, is important as well and financial stewardship is very important, but giving is much more than financial.

The one thing we all have in common is our time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But how do we use it? Do we give time to God in prayer and study? Do we give time to help others whether church members or not? Do we give time to encourage others, sometimes by listening, sometimes with a phone call, sometimes by visiting someone who is sick whether at home or in hospital, sometimes with a few encouraging words, sometimes with a card, letter, text or email? Maybe even with something as simple as a smile or a pleasant greeting. Are we alert for opportunities to give of our time, which may be far more important than giving in a financial sense ( Matthew 25:34-40)?

We should never give to get, in any sense, but the scripture above very clearly shows that if we develop a giving attitude, we will not only benefit others, but benefit ourselves as well.

Lets finish with a short poem:
“What, giving again I ask in dismay,
And must I keep giving and giving away?
Oh No, said the angel, looking me through,
Just keep giving until God stops giving to you!”

Loving, giving Father, help us to learn how to give generously in every area of our lives
for the benefit of others, and please help us to recognise opportunities to do so. In Jesus name we pray.
